Working in Confined Space Safety
What is a Confined Space?
A confined space is any area that is large enough for a worker to enter but has limited entry/exit points and is not designed for continuous occupancy (e.g., tanks, silos, pits, manholes, tunnels).
Hazards in Confined Spaces
Oxygen deficiency or enrichment
Toxic gases, fumes, or dust
Risk of fire or explosion
Restricted movement and visibility
Engulfment from liquids or loose materials
Safety Precautions
Permit-to-Work System
Always obtain a Confined Space Entry Permit before starting work.
Ensure authorization from a competent person.
Atmospheric Testing
Test for oxygen levels, flammable gases, and toxic vapors.
Use continuous monitoring devices.
Ventilation & Lighting
Provide adequate forced ventilation.
Use explosion-proof lighting when necessary.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Wear helmets, gloves, safety shoes, and protective clothing.
Use respirators or breathing apparatus when required.
Communication & Supervision
Maintain constant communication between entrants and attendants.
Assign a standby person outside the confined space.
Emergency Preparedness
Have rescue equipment (tripods, lifelines, harnesses) ready.
Train workers in confined space rescue and first aid.
